Antoni Gaudi

Antoni Gaudi was born in 1852 in Ruis, Spain. He is known as one of the greatest architects that ever lived and was one of the founders of Catalan Modernism. Gaudí’s works have a highly individualized, one-of-a-kind, extremely innovative style. Most of his works are located in Barcelona, including his main work, the unfinished Basilica of the Sagrada Família.

Gaudi was inspired by nature and animals, and he used these symbols and infused them into his design and architecture. The highlights of Gaudi’s work in Barcelona can be seen by visiting La Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera, Casa Batllo, and the Palau Guell mansions and beautiful Park Guell.

Casa Mila

In the Eixample neighborhood, on the beautiful Passeig de Gracia boulevard, is one of Gaudi’s most famous facades and buildings, Casa Mila or La Pedrera. Casa Mila is Barcelona’s quintessential Modernista building and was Gaudi’s last major commission, from 1906-1910, before he began dedicating himself to his final work: the Sagrada Familia.

Park Guell

Park Guell is located high in the foothills of Barcelona and includes the Monumental Zone of Gaudi’s works, and a park outside the Monumbental Zone full of walking and hiking trails, gardens, spectacular views, and iconic rock sculpture. Visiting the park makes for a wonderful half day if you enjoy walking, nature and gardens.

Casa Batllo

Casa Batllo, like La Pedrera, is also located in the Eixample neighborhood on the beautiful Passeig de Gracia Boulevard. It is one of the three buildings that make up the Block of Discord, combining the talents of three different creative Modernista architects. The three are: Casa Batllo, Casa Amatller and Casa Lleo Morera. Casa Batllo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is an icon of architecture in Barcelona.

Gaudi was commissioned to redesign an existing house on the site, and fully redesigned it between 1904 and 1906. Besides its artistic value, the building is also extremely functional, much more characteristic of modern times than of the past, and is highly characteristic Gaudi design.

La Sagrada Familia

The Basilica de la Sagrada Familia is Antoni Gaudi’s most famous and awe-inspiring work, and his final work of architecture. Gaudi worked to design and build the Sagrada Familia for 43 years, from 1883 until his untimely death in 1926. But a century later, builders continue to work to finish Gaudi’s masterpiece, and it is anticipated to be finished by 2026 — one hundred years following Gaudi’s death. The Basílica de la Sagrada Família, also known as the Sagrada Família, is a large unfinished Roman Catholic minor basilica in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The building is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
